Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City on October 27, 1858, to Theodore Roosevelt Sr. and Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, an affluent family of Dutch and Scots-Irish descent. He ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of New York City in 1886. He served on the U.S. Civil Service Commission (1889–1895), as president of the New York City Police Board (1895–1897), and as Assistant Secretary of the Navy (1897–1898). He resigned to lead the Rough Riders in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, becoming a national hero. He then served as Governor of New York (1899–1900) before becoming Vice President under McKinley in 1901.
