George H. W. Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1924, to Prescott Sheldon Bush and Dorothy Walker Bush, into a prominent Connecticut family with Wall Street and political ties. He grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut, and attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. On his eighteenth birthday, the day after Pearl Harbor had been attacked, he enlisted in the Navy, becoming its youngest commissioned pilot at the time. He flew 58 combat missions in the Pacific during World War II and was shot down over the Bonin Islands, rescued by a submarine after floating in his raft under enemy fire.

Career

After the war, Bush attended Yale, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with an economics degree in 1948. He passed up a Wall Street career to move to West Texas, where he worked in the oil fields and co-founded Zapata Petroleum Corporation, becoming wealthy. He served as a U.S. Representative from Texas (1967–1971). He then held a series of appointed positions: U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (1971–1973), Republican National Committee Chairman (1973–1974), Chief of the U.S. Liaison Office in China (1974–1975), and Director of the CIA (1976–1977). He sought the 1980 Republican presidential nomination but lost to Ronald Reagan, who chose him as his running mate. Bush served as Vice President from 1981 to 1989.
