Bill Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe III in Hope, Arkansas, on August 19, 1946. His father died in a car accident three months before his birth. His mother, Virginia Cassidy, trained as a nurse-anesthetist and later married Roger Clinton, whose surname Bill eventually adopted. He grew up in Hot Springs, Arkansas, in a complicated household shaped by his stepfather's alcoholism and gambling. Career
Clinton taught law at the University of Arkansas School of Law beginning in 1973. He ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1974, narrowly losing to incumbent John Paul Hammerschmidt. He was elected Arkansas Attorney General in 1976 and then Governor in 1978, becoming at 32 one of the youngest governors in the country. He was defeated for reelection in 1980, a loss he attributed partly to unpopular car-tag fee increases, and undertook a methodical comeback. He served again as Governor from 1983 to 1992, earning the nickname the 'Comeback Kid.' He helped lead the centrist Democratic Leadership Council, building a national political network before announcing his 1992 presidential run.
