Joe Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on November 20, 1942, to Joseph Robinette Biden Sr. and Catherine Eugenia 'Jean' Finnegan Biden, a working-class Irish-Catholic family. When he was ten, the family moved to Claymont, Delaware, and later to Wilmington. Biden has spoken of growing up with a stutter and working hard to overcome it by memorizing and reciting long passages from poetry. He attended the University of Delaware, graduating in 1965, and then Syracuse University College of Law, graduating in 1968. He was admitted to the Delaware bar in 1969.

Career

Biden practiced law briefly in Wilmington and served on the New Castle County Council in 1970. At age 29, he won a U.S. Senate seat from Delaware in November 1972, one of the youngest senators ever elected. Weeks later, his wife Neilia and infant daughter Naomi were killed in a car accident and his two sons were seriously injured; Biden was sworn in at their hospital bedside. He commuted daily by Amtrak from Wilmington to Washington so he could be home with his sons each night. He chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee (1987–1995), overseeing the confirmation hearings of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas, and chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (2001–2003 and 2007–2009). He made unsuccessful presidential bids in 1988 and 2008 before being selected as Barack Obama's running mate. He served as Vice President from 2009 to 2017.
